Positively Editorial

What does a freelance writer or editor cost?

It’s not as expensive as you might think! (Especially when you consider how quickly a writer will return well-written content that’s ready to use, saving you time and sanity.) I’ve listed some pricing examples below, but every project is different and I do offer flexibility depending on circumstances. Quotes are always available for free, so go ahead and request one for your project if you’re unsure.

Note that I always charge per piece or project rather than by the hour. This gives you a firm cost that won’t change at the end of the project so you can plan your budget accordingly. However, I do sometimes charge an hourly rate for in-person meetings or extensive research. If this is the case, it will be noted in advance in the contract. You will never be surprised by one of my invoices.

Example pricing:

  • Writing a 500-word article: $195
  • Writing a 1,000-word article + in-depth research on the topic: $595
  • Copyediting a 500-word article: $95
  • Writing all text for a tri-fold brochure (front and back): $745
  • Creating a reusable template for item descriptions: $295
  • Writing a 1,500 word quick-start guide for an app: $995
  • Documenting an API with 10 endpoints/methods: $1,495

Reminder: These are examples, and the actual quoted price will vary depending on the specifics of the project. That’s why many freelance writers prefer not to post rates at all. These examples are shared as part of my commitment to maximum transparency and straightforward communication.
